THE FOOD COMMONS: A community growing project.
The Local Food Initiative (LFI) and the Indigenous Friendship Society of Revelstoke (IFSR) have partnered to develop a 1.8 acre plot of urban land into an educational food project at Powerhouse Road.
The purpose of Food Commons is to create a community space to grow food and share knowledge in ways that honors the land and the people who use it – in the past, present, and future. By engaging with Indigenous leaders and knowledge keepers, local growers, and the community at large, Food Commons aims to take steps towards reconciliation and enhancing food security in Revelstoke.
VISION
The Food Commons is an educational and community farm that honors Indigenous foodways and supports food security for present and future generations.
MISSION
The IFSR and LFI are working together to restore 1.8 acres of land into a welcoming gathering space where we grow, harvest and share food and knowledge. The Food Commons will host financially sustainable programs to ensure the long-term resilience of the project.
VALUES
We will achieve the vision & mission of the Food Commons project through the following:
Humility - A profound relationship with the land, plants, animals, and ecosystems that is rooted in gratitude, reciprocity, and balance.
Collaboration - Embrace all who want to contribute to the Food Commons in the spirit of community.
Equity - Offering equal access to a sustainable and just food system for all Revelstokians.
Stewardship - Care for and deep connection to the land.
Curiosity - Open to learning and unlearning.
Celebration - Of the rich connection to food in Revelstoke that brings us together.
Courage - To be innovative & embrace new ways of knowing.
Community Engagement
In 2024 the LFI and IFSR engaged community members from Revelstoke Secondary School, local farmers, and Indigenous Elders and leaders from the Sinixt, the Secwépemc, the Syilx and the Ktunaxa nations. The intention of our engagement is to gather feedback for developing the highest and best use of the land to serve our community.
In 2025 we are continuing our engagement with community groups who share the land, or otherwise value its use. Your input is also very important to us. Keep your eye on this webpage for ways you can contribute, coming soon.

Working Together
Thank you so much to our collaborators and funding partners. This project would not be possible without the help of
The City of Revelstoke - For granting access to the land. Through community engagement on their Powerhouse Road Park Concept plan, the City of Revelstoke recognized the need for a community garden and has since worked together with the LFI and the IFSR to create the Food Commons.
